Current System: Transportation
A culture of failure in Olympia has resulted in broken promises,
inaction on major projects and erosion in public trust when it comes
to transportation.
- The Governor and Democrats over-promised and are under-delivering
on promises made with the 9.5 cent gas tax increase.
- There are still no viable funding or design plans in place for
the Alaskan Way Viaduct and 520 Bridge.
- The inaction on mega-projects has been at the expense of other
important projects: Highway 2; North - South freeway in Spokane;
I-5/Columbia River Crossing (Vancouver); and I-405.
- $285 million was appropriated in 2003 to build four new ferries
to replace the Steel Electrics.
- The first boat was to be in the water in 2008, but today
the project is still in its design phase.
- Other ferries have crashed, been pulled out the water or
are inefficient. This has led to crisis-mode decisions.
We must change from a mindset of "what is" to "what could be"
